Job Summary

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is responsible for managing wildfire response and planning for fire on the landscape to mitigate impacts to communities, values at risk, and encourage sustainable, healthy, and resilient ecosystems.

Wildfire Resiliency (WR) is a key land management tool that can be used to achieve a range of objectives, including values management for response, wildfire risk reduction, ecosystem restoration The Planning Officer will work in partnership with organizations, government agencies, stakeholders and partners to develop and implement the planning foundation for the program. This includes coordinating initiatives to integrate WR into government's natural resource management planning framework (e.g., modernized land use planning, forest landscape planning, fire management, wildfire risk reduction tactical planning).

An effective communicator and collaborator, you develop strategic partnerships and negotiate key components of projects with partners. You possess excellent interpersonal and written communication skills and are highly skilled at project direction, management and leadership. Job Requirements:
  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a fully licensed professional with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (i.e. Association of Forest Professionals, Institute of Agrologists, Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists). Preference may be given to Registered Professional Foresters. Note: Immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the BC association within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • A Technical Diploma in a natural resource management related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography, or Natural Resource Management), or an equivalent combination of education/training; plus, 2 or more years' experience working in a natural resource discipline.
  • Experience managing multiple projects or leading a component (e.g., sub-project) of a major project.
  • Experience managing relationships with stakeholders and partners and leading consultation sessions.
  • Experience implementing provincial land management planning processes.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent.
  • Preference may be given to those with fire/fuel management experience.

This position can be located in a BC Wildfire Service District Office, Fire Zone, Fire Centre, or HQ (Kamloops or Victoria), subject to Ministry operational requirements and space availability at time of offer.
