WSP Earth & Environmental Applied Solutions team (EEAS) is seeking a Senior Construction Engineer to join its Calgary, AB or Winnipeg, MB based team.

The practice of construction engineering is the engineering of "How-to" and then the technical support and delivery of that "How-to" in practical terms in construction projects across Canada.

The role involves working as part of a team of construction engineering professionals working across Canada with projects nationally as well as overseas. We develop detailed designs and specifications and provide contract administration, contract management and general contracting services for a very diverse clientele. Design-build experience in building construction (Part 3 on the National Building Code) would be an asset.

The wide range of projects may include new construction, building and infrastructure demolition, large earthmoving projects including large mining projects, landfill closure and mine closure, remediation, and complex environmental capping construction.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Leading detailed engineering design and specification package development efforts on projects across Canada;
  • Project development, work instruction planning (WIP's), project planning, phasing and scheduling - working with stakeholders to ensure constructible project delivery. Candidates must demonstrate means and methods knowledge of construct with the ability to provide detailed sequential descriptions of how to execute work. Candidates will assist with other constructability reviews;
  • Some project management of engineering projects, and contract administration experience is required as part of project delivery;
  • Managing site QA/QC efforts and field staff on multiple projects;
  • Work with estimating functions and procurement functions on development of scopes of work and providing support to estimating and procurement activities as necessary;
  • Preparing detailed engineering estimates for projects;
  • Assisting team members in the preparation of proposals and presentations to promote services;
  • Management of project health and safety, with support from the operational and corporate H&S team;
  • Knowledge of Project scheduling (MS Project and Primavera P6);
  • Working with field staff to resolve technical and constructability issues; and,
  • Assist senior staff with business development

You will have a background in:
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering and Management or equivalent with a background of having worked closely with process and/or mechanical / electrical engineering professionals being an asset;
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (minimum 10 - 15 years of licensed practice), and must be licensed in Manitoba as a professional engineer, and the ability to be licensed in other Provinces.
  • Experience in decommissioning and demolition engineering would be a useful asset;
  • Verifiable experience in the development of engineering designs and specification packages as part of a cohesive multidisciplinary engineering team;
  • Demonstrable experience in planning projects from site visits along with scopes of work planned out by other senior consultants in a wide variety of disciplines;
  • Strong skills in innovation and collaboration with other specialty consulting disciplines;
  • Work cohesively with estimators and purchasing professionals on sourcing and costing of work and project development;
  • Demonstrated experience in the project management and contract administration of a wide variety of construction and demolition projects;
  • Experienced in project scheduling and project phasing, cost control and contract administration;
  • Provide a technical writing sample with CV;
  • Demonstrate creativity and a willingness to learn new things and expand horizons;
  • Experienced liaising with clients and consultants in the support of the project and in management of site staff and subcontractors;
  • Self-starter and highly motivated;
  • Support senior staff on business development with clients;
  • Excellent communications skills; (written, verbal and interpersonal);
  • Proficient communication, reading and writing skills in French, or other languages at a professional level is a strong asset;
  • Multilingual - French and/or Spanish would be an asset;
  • Available for 40% field work with some regional travel. Based on experience and desire, there are international business travel opportunities as well;
